About Disability Management at UCSF
Disability Management efforts are dedicated to reducing the human and fiscal cost of workplace disability to UCSF. This is accomplished by:
- Providing education and early intervention services to prevent or minimize the effects of disability in the workplace,
- Facilitating early identification, referral, and treatment for disability and/or injuries at work,
- Assisting employees with disabilities in overcoming disability-related restrictions or limitations,
- Implementing UC policy and/or contract provisions regarding return to work, reasonable accommodation, and medical separation,
- Consulting with manangement, Human Resources, and other University staff regarding workplace disability issues.
The Team:
Lawrence Hickey, Assistant Director Employee Support Services [+ -] Larry Hickey joined the Human Resources Department in 1998 after many years as a consultant specializing in benefits, disability, and workers' compensation programs. Larry oversees the Employee Support Services units within HR, including Benefits and Financial Planning, Disability Management Services, and the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program. Recently, Larry has taken on an additional role of overseeing the transition of HR service delivery to the Office of the President. Carrie Benson, Workers' Compensation Assistant Inez Brown, Administrative Assistant Roger Howland, Sr. Workers' Comp Analyst [+ -] Roger Howland, previously the Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor at UCOP, joined the Disability Management Services unit at UCSF in December 2008. He has been with the University since 1995 and has worked in the private sector as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor since 1992. He coordinates compliance with the Workers' Compensation program, facilitates return-to-work planning and claims handling, provides case management, and tracks ergonomic program equipment purchases. Judith Rosen, Disability Management Analyst [+ -] Judy Rosen joined Disability Management Services in March 2006 to support the employees of the School of Medicine. Prior to joining UC, she worked in the private sector for more than 19 years as a rehabilitation counselor, vocational expert, and vocational evaluator to assist individuals with disabilities who were receiving services through the State Department of Rehabilitation, the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, and the worker’s compensation system. Jerrold Ulmer, Senior Disability Management Analyst [+ -] Jerry Ulmer has performed vocational rehabilitation and Disability Mangement Services for 22 years. Jerry serves as management, liaison to departments and external service providers (Sedgwick/Liberty Mutual), and direct service provider for employees with work-related and non work-related medical conditions.
