How much will Sun Life pay during my pregnancy leave?

For an uncomplicated pregnancy, the disability period typically begins with the day of the delivery and ends approximately six weeks (or 42 days) following the delivery date.  Each disability claim is reviewed by Sun Life and the length of the disability period approved is based on supporting medical documentation.  The first 30 days of the disability period are not paid by Sun Life given this is a waiting period; as a result, Sun Life typically pays benefits for the later 12 days.  During the 12 day period, Sun Life will off-set their benefit based on other income received (including income from UC).  And note, Sun Life will pay at a minimum 15% of the benefit even if the offsets would have reduced the benefit to zero.  During the 30 day waiting period a trainee may use their two weeks of parental leave and sick/vacation leave.

When a claim is approved, Sun Life sends a letter outlining the benefit payment; the following are data elements that may appear in the letter:

  • Basic Monthly Earning: (Trainee’s monthly income)
  • Monthly Gross Benefit at 66.67%: (Trainee’s monthly income multiplied by the benefit level of 66.67% and capped at $3000)
  • Less Other Income: (Minus income received during the month of the disability)
  • Net Monthly Income: (The Trainee’s ‘monthly’ benefit payable)

  • Your Final Benefit:
  • The benefit amount listed in your letter is typically not a full month of income.  Your ‘Final Benefit’ is based on the ‘Net Monthly Income’ divided by 30 days and multiplied by the number of days eligible for a benefit in that month.
